Exercise 1—Add Page Headers

Open your MockEntrySub.docx.

  1. On the first page, double-click in the top margin area of the title page to open the Header area.
  2. When the Header & Footer tool bar opens, click on Header in the Header & Footer group.
  3. From the drop-down list, select Blank (Three Columns).
    • Three occurrences of [Type here] will be inserted into the header; one at the left margin, one centered, and one at the right margin.
  4. Double-click on the left-most [Type here].
    1. For a contest entry, delete it.
    2. For a submission, type your name.
  5. Double-click on the center [Type here] and type in the book title.
  6. Double-click on the right-most [Type here].
    • Click on the Page Number button.
      • Select Current Position.
      • Select Plain Number.
  7. To add an email address and phone number for a submission only.
    • Click return after putting in the page number.
    • Type an email address.
    • Click return.
    • Type a phone number.

It looks weird to have page headers on the cover page. We'll get rid of those in the next exercise.

The method I’ve outlined above is the most efficient way to add headers. As usual with any Microsoft product, there are many ways of doing the same thing. I’ll let you find the other ways to insert page numbers and headers.
